Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Review

War, losing loved ones, and the ability to use alchemy! That’s what makes Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood such an epic and tragic anime. But fear not! There are plenty of moments that make us smile and even start to laugh! It all just depends on how you look at things.

The story is about two young brothers who lose their mother to a disease that could not be cured. The brothers then go on a mission to learn how to use the power of alchemy, a mix of science and magic, to bring their mother back to life! But in order to perform alchemy, something of equal value must be lost, and in this process they failed. There is no substitute for a human soul, and what they resurrect is not their mother, but an inhuman monster. On top of that, the older brother Edward Elric loses his left leg while his younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body as payment for the transmutation.

In order to save his brothers soul, the only thing left of him, Edward now has to sacrifice his right arm but he is able to bond his brother’s soul to a suit of armor. Edward then vows to search for the mysterious Philosopher’s Stone, as its power is said to be able to restore their original bodies. But it means having become a “State Alchemist,” a dog of the opresive military. Still brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric start their journey to search for the stone. Meaning that Edward would have to join the State Military to give him the freedom to search for the stone. However, they are not the only ones seeking the powerful stone.

Edward personality shows him as immature. He is decidedly stubborn and strong-willed. He is somewhat selfish and remarkably self-absorbed, generally acting more out of self-interest and taking several opportunities to show his own ego or flaunt the governmental power of his military position. He has a reputation for being foul-mouthed, only too happy to bluntly and harshly relieve others of their comfortable delusions regarding god, reality, or their own self-importance. Alphonse on the other hand, is gentle, quiet and shy but not afraid to fight, well suited for his metal body. Alphonse is always mistaken for being the State alchemist, a long running joke in the series, especially since Edwards Official State Title is The Full Metal Alchemist. Through their journey,  the brothers must work together to overcome their challenges, and find the answers that they’re looking for.
